Help Us Decide The Setlist!

By Scott | September 2, 2009

Alright ladies and gents, the guys and I have a debate that needs to be settled and we need YOU to help us. For the upcoming tour this September, should we….

A. Play Chutzpah! in its entirety alongside a handful of best of’s and old classics
or
B. Play a set full of old classics and best of’s with a few choice cuts from Chutzpah! thrown in

Rehearsals are right around the corner and we need to figure out what the hell we’re doing so let us know your thoughts.

Cheers.
Scotty

    A. You must play this whole album, with a few classics.
    The new album is amazing.

‘best of’ set lists are for festivals and one-off’s…..lets hear plenty from ‘Chutzpah’ & ‘WiLDHEARTS’ we love what the band are doing now, so lets hear it!

get that distillers cover in there somewhere too…..please! :)

    Hi guys.
Play in its entirety. It’s ballsy, but crucially the tracks are all strong enough. The album is getting the right attention and the focus is the future. The gig reviews will have a new different focus, a new hook, new interest to be discussed and passed on. Different to the complimentary ‘how great the Wildhearts gig was, they played all their classics and favourites.’
Show new (and old) fans what the future holds, then blow them away with the best of, to go out and buy too.
I’ve been following you for years and seen many gigs, the album stands up enough for you to start differently.

Oh definitely the whole of Chutzpah, can’t wait to hear those songs live. Would be disappointed to hear only one or two off the new album in favour of tracks we’ve heard countless times before in a live setting.

  9. HUEO Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 21:46

And if you come to S. America like it’s rumored play a mix of both so we can have the classics and the new, we are first timers!

boys.. maybe in the uk option A is good.. but if u dare :) to come here in Italy please go for a B!!!

  12. Rich Says:

    All of Chutzpah! Gotta be!

  13. Gaz Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 21:58

    Option A, without a doubt.

We all know what the old songs sound like live, so mix it up a bit, do something different, it’s what you guys are good at!!

2 sets, Chutpah!, 4 or 5 of the covers then an encore of 2 or 3 oldies to finish.

    Everyones happy!!

Free beer and dancing girls too… Or is that too much to ask?

    September 2nd, 2009 at 21:59

Two of my good friends (who were brothers) David and Andrew Gale died in May 2007 (Heart Attack) and June 2009 (Collapsed Lung).

They were both massive fans of yours and I have been to see you guys many a time with them.

Would really appreciate if you could play 29x the pain or Jonesing for Jones and dedicate it to them at the Leeds gig on 26th Sept.

    Thanks

Option A, Chutzpah! in its wonderful glory! ACE!

  16. lemle Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:02

Option A….something different would be good…And you all seem proud of the new album…to hear a band play mainly new material is a good optimistic sign in my opinion!!!

  17. laura Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:04

    B. The classics! Along with some new stuff.
    Please :-)

  18. Noel Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:07

    Option A please

  19. dan phillips Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:09

ummmm option B for sure! c’mon… older wildhearts stuff is pretty darn amazing they need to get back on the drugs and write some more classics, the new album is average for the wildhearts compared to the likes of earth vs. phuq and even fishing for luckies….someone had to say it,, we’re all thinking it…sorry.

  20. JSayonara Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:09

Chutzpah in it’s entirety please but rather than all in one go how about some oldies mixed in-between the new ‘uns. I can’t speak for others but I like the unpredictabilty when I see a band live especially when an old favourite or rarely played live track comes from out of the blue!
Also if it’s not asking too much at least one from Don’t be Happy…. Just Worry would be nice…Splattermania or Weekend maybe?
(one from Endless Nameless would be sweet too lol).

  21. stevie boyd Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:11

its an easy call really….its gotta be(A)…it really does require an airing live or ur doing urselfs an injustice….and like u would’nt give us the classic’s…of course u would….but ur never gonna please everyone!(first timers)
and if it is the first time seeing the band…….
WHERE THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN? LOL

  22. Mike May Says:

  23. paul Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:12

play all of chutzpah! and some classics my album of the year needs to be heard live, see you at the waterfront

  24. Gallifrey Seven Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:14

Without a doubt it has to be the new album then a bunch of oldies.

I HAVE to hear every single Chutzpah song live!!!!

  25. Iain Mc Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:14

Chutzpha! in all it’s magnificent glory and a good selection from the other albums and b-sides. Maybe a cheeky wee Sky Babies for good measure.

  26. Gallifrey Seven Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:17

PS – Dan Phillips: just because you have no ears, don’t assume everyone else is as much as a tard as you.

Just so you know, I think THIS is the best album ever.

  27. Stu Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:17

A bit of both, but it depends how long it is ’til you tour again cuz that might be an opportunity to play new and old and plug the new album on this tour. Either way I DON’T CARE, it’ll be amazing either way. Stu x

  28. Iain Mc Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:17

I might even learn to spell Chutzpah correctly for the gig. Never mind, looks like I’ve already done it.

  29. mike meyer Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:20

endless nameless in its entirety and a few choice cuts off chutzpah

  30. Andy Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:21

I’d really like to hear the whole of Chutzpah live. Maybe you could do a gig like the Manics did for Journal for Plague Lovers at the Roundhouse earlier this year – come on and play the whole new album in order and then have a break and come back and do a set of old classics – you’d definitely be onto a winner with me doing that. Can’t wait to see you at Shepherd’s Bush and freakin love the new album.

  31. jamie rock Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:23

My vote is for option A. Without a doubt. Wanna see all the new tracks live. Know the classics inside out. This would be a sweet treat, and give the hardcore fans something they havent seen year after year. oh and Carmelita, and anything off Endless, Nameless. You know it makes sense….

Play the whole of Chutzpah plus a load of rarities. I’ve been waiting for ages to hear Dangerlust and Sky Babies live!

  35. Nick Invincible Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:28

Chutzpah all the way through then a few old bits and bobs. Lovely jubbly!

  36. Si Ellison Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:28

It’d be great to hear the whole of Chutzpah for one set and follow it up with a few classics and B-sides.

Not many bands play their full new album but this one is definitely asking for a full live performance.

Personally I’d love to see you guys play Rooting for the Bad Guy again. My better half will be 7 months pregnant with our first kid when we see you at Newcastle and I’d love to be able to tell him/her that they heard that one before they were even born!

  37. charles murray Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:30

its gotta be the whole new album plus a best of. you have truly surpassed on this one dudes rock on x x

  38. empee Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:30

Depends on how long you fellers are planning to play at the gigs. If it’s a wholesome 90 mins then yeah, Chutzpah followed by a classics/best of set.
However, I insist you play Borderline, Pissjoy, Rooting For The Bad Guy & Cheers in that lot :o p

  39. Scott Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:32

it doesn’t matter what you play – just come back the St. Louis, Missouri!!!!!!!!

  40. Firedup Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:34

    Option A
please also play fire up, + just in lust with all b sides (‘mindslide’ friend for 5 mins etc) + hate the world day and I will die happy.

  41. james duffield Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:38

i think its got to be !chutzpah! all the way.it’s such a strong album. and to wash that down, set 2 could be set list of songs that don’t get played live, this would make a wildhearts show very different instead of seeing the same songs played every tour

  42. Woody Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:38

As long as 29x the pain and Suckerpunch are played, i’ll be a happy man! The Jackson Whites is the best tune off Chutzpah IMHO, awesome straight away, on the first listen! which is rare for me. So option A i would say…..
I’ve heard that some festival appearences might be on the cards next year, so i’ll get my classic Wildhearts fix then!

  43. Lawra Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:40

    Option B!

  44. Glenn Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:45

Play Endless Nameless in it’s entirety then Chutzpa then some Classics including ‘Kiss My Arse Before You Say Goodbye’

  45. Jules Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:58

    Option A, definitely.

  46. Chris Davies Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 22:59

I’d love to hear all the new album but not in the same order, mix it up with the classics and some rarites.

But 1 hour and 30 minutes of whatever you play will still be quality no matter what.

  47. stevie reevo Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 23:02

CHUTZPA!!! Go on!!! Why the hell not. We’ll all be listening to it non stop until the gigs anyway. I am in glasgow so it’ll be great to get the whole album, nice and fresh. I would suggest, Maybe 2 Chutzpa songs, then a classic, then 2 chutzpa songs, get where i am going here!! haha. great album.

    Cheers
    Stevie.
    I Chutzpa’d yer maw!

  50. Tom Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 23:11

I would go for a good few from Chutzpah! but keep most of the classics and maybe a few unexpected ones! Having head The Jackson Whites at sonisphere I can safely say you should stick that one on the setlist, along with The Only One. They’re the must haves :)

  51. art Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 23:11

Chutzpah in it entirety, plus Zeen Requiem – Sweetest song – The Hard Way – Carmelita -Schizophonic – Sky Babies – Moodswing And Roundabouts – Cant do right for doing wrong – Heroin … Can live without anything from earth vs..as was at the anniversary gig! See you in London next month.

  54. Gareth d Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 23:18

More option a than b! (how’s that for sitting on the fence!) play 7 or 8 off chutzpah and a mix of old stuff, some classics and some more obscure. Oh and drop vanilla radio! Can’t wait for rock city!!!

  55. Alex D Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 23:25

I would have to go for the classics! Maybe half and half – how about some of the older tracks that don;t get played often? Loveshit has always been a personal fave and Weekend!!

  56. Rob Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 23:26

Ummmm…. I’m totslly in the option B camp. I know this message board is full of die hards who have already got into the new album but many, many people at the shows won’t have.
And in fact I wouldn’t want to hear any of the albums in their entireity – I would much prefer a selection and a mix to keep all the fans happy.

Whatver you think of the new album I’m pretty sure the oldies/ better known will go down the best with the crowd as a whole – plus and there is so much from the eponymous album we’ve never heard live either.

  57. graant Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 23:27

I like the idea of playing each album track but mixing them up into the set list, therapy? did this at recent gigs and looking at the set lists it was a great idea they managed to play a few of the songs they always play too whilst giving some of them a rest and also managed to throw in an old bside and mini album track

  58. Muttlius Q. Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 23:29

A A A A A A A!!! Play Chutzpah when you come back to NYC soon please! I’ll be there with bells on.

  59. diane Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 23:38

    B definitely

  60. Soundog Says:
    September 2nd, 2009 at 23:53

Do all of Chutzpah! (+!) Celebrate that album.
I mean, c’mon, if you don’t do it *now*, you’ve got to wait 15 years for the anniversary gig to do it.

But don’t play it in the album sequence, and mix in old favourites – by which I preferably mean a few hits and rarely aired tracks like Friend For Five Minutes, Hate The World Day or Be My Drug.

But if it all goes wrong and it’s just Chutzpah! cuts, Jebus, Vortex, You Are Proof, Mazel Tov and Chutzpah ARE mandatory. I’ll be coming over from Germany and for my tastes each new song would make the trip more worthwhile.

  61. Martin "M45T1N" Hoare Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 00:00

    Hey Scott

You guys have to play the whole of Chutzpah with some oldies thrown in especially when you come to Portsmouth on the 21st, youve gotta play CAPRICE, Whoah Shit And Everlone For The Win :-D

  62. Momo Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 00:05

    A!
I wanna hear new sounds of THE WiLDHEARTS.

  63. Nick Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 00:32

    Opition A without a doubt!

The “mix of old and new” is done every tour by every band, mainly because so many bands rely so much on nostalgia and their newest record just isn’t good enough to play straight through.

This being a case of neither of those, you have to go with A.

  64. sonic shaker Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 00:38

The whole of the incredible Chutzpah and some classis ( have you got all night). i think that is A then.

  65. Ug Says:

  69. Tony Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 01:13

I’d play maybe 4-5 new songs and the rest a best of the back catalogue-there’s too much good stuff to discount.Great new album but I have selfish reasons-it’ll be the first time seeing the band live and I’d wanna hear a whole range of stuff!option b please.

  70. SkyChaser Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 01:26

A for sure! Been a huge fan for about 17 years, Ginger is the best songwriter ever to walk the earth… but even I was surprised at just how tight and fresh the new record sounds, and I’ll be getting into Sorry & the Sinatras after hearing Scott’s vocal on The Only One, so full of soul.

Please play all of Chutzpah, but not in order, mix in the oldies so we don’t know what’s coming next. And if you happen to feel like playing Do The Channel Bop in Glasgow you’d be fulfilling a 14 year ambition for me… Oh! ASK SCOTT TO SING ‘ANTHEM’ LIVE!!! Now THAT would be amazing…

  71. Adam Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 01:37

    Gotta be option A…

On the condition you open with Chutzpah Jnr. I heard a clip of it the other day and it would easily be the best gig opening ever (alongside the competition intro thing)!

  72. az Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 01:37

CHUTZPAH! in it’s entirety and then old classic, chuck something form every album on to fuck em up… you guys gotta come to Australia again, made my life that show in Sydney.

!Chutzpah! in it entirety and some classic endless nameless stuff like ‘pissjoy’ and ‘now is the colour’ along with ‘better than cable’ ‘looking for the one’ and ‘slaughtered authors’ would be insanely good!

  78. MACiNNES Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 03:15

Guys its got to be “A”

Play this fantastic new album in it’s entirety.

It’s a new era for the band.

dont get me wrong I love everything from “don’t be happy…just worry” to “Stop us….” but this new album is fantastic.

As long as the changeovers are reasonably quick theres plenty of time for the whole of the new album and loads of the old classics.

give us “hate the world day” “urge” “abhoria” “caprice” “be my drug” amongst the classics section.

why not do the show in two parts like the manics did, play the whole of the new album then come back on and play the classics.

    cheers

    MACiNNES X

  83. Seb Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 06:37

I’d prefer Option A, too. At least for the UK gigs…
First part of the show should be Chutzpah from the beginning to the end – it was a great experience when you did that with the ‘Earth vs.’ last year!
In the second part – hey, it’s YOUR Gig, do whatever you want! I’m sure you’ll find a great mix of Classics and Rarities… But of course I’d die for a live ‘Sky Babies’ :-)

@ Soundog: I’ll also be coming over from Germany. Which gig will you see? I’ll be in Leeds.

    Guys,
The new album is absolutely amazing, screaming to be played live. There’s no point in touring for an album if you’re not going to play new stuff, so it’s gotta be option A. As for what else to play on the tour, it’d be fantastic to hear some of the less-played tunes (Slaughtered Authors, Two-Way Idiot Mirror, etc.) but obviously you’re not going to be able to play for about nine hours, so the classics have also got to be in there. Personally, as long as I hear the new album live, I’m pretty much OK with whatever you play, having seen you shit-loads of times. (More of the eponymous album please.) Catch you on the 19th at Rock City.

Take care and have fun. It’s what life’s for.

    Cliff

Great new album, but it would be good to hear The Hard Way,Bi Polar and The Revolution + some of the oldies mixed in there too.
    Cheers see you in Brighton

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

You have to do new album in full. Isn’t that the point of recording new material. I love the classics but we’ve heard ‘My baby is…… a million times and I’m sure you’re a bit sick of playing it too. In order to stay relevant and fresh you need to play the album. Are you not dying to play a set of almost all new material??

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  88. Boot Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 07:52

I was thinking about this only yesterday.

I’d like to hear the new album cos its amazing – but then start mixing up the songs similar to Gingers 40th gig where one song merges into another entirley, i think it was Headfuck became Brown Sugar(rolling stones) and then back again. It would bring a fresh sound to old songs. Even if they are classics we’ve heard them a million times.

Also play a tune or two off ENDLESS NAMELESS!

  89. Kirsty Fakingham Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 08:00

how about you play nothing from Chutzpah as its awful

    whats happened to you guys?

  91. Lee Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 08:33

The new album is super shit hot!! You should play all of it with a few classics tagged on the end!!! Cheers, Lee

  94. Raksu Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 08:59

I definitely go for option A too! The new album is just too good to start discriminating songs and chosing others to play live! Just play them all together with some of the good oldies! jep!

  95. Rob Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 09:20

Definately play Chutzpah in its entirety. Plus a few choice cuts from “The Wildhearts” and I never got bored hearing 29x the pain.

hmmm, hows about the new album, and then songs we dont hear live often, vday, everlone etc and you HAVE to play understanding jane! cant wait to see you chaps in bristol!!

  97. ben Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 09:38

I think option B. Whilst I love the new album there is nothing like hearing some classic tracks played live. Additionally many people at the shows will not have got the new album yet and will not know the tunes.

  98. Paulron32 Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 09:38

Option A please – why not make it the full Japanese version plus The Snake, The Lion, The Monkey And The Spider.

Also – News Of THe World, Show a Little Emotion, Anthem – Scott vocals, Just In Lust, V Day, Inglorious, Red Light Green Light, Unbroken, 29X the Pain, Love You Til I don’t, and I never get bored of hearing Everlone live.

You could just stand there and make fart noises, no doubt you could make it sound catchy.

See you at Newcastle and Manchester.

  102. Arabiandisco Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 09:48

Please don’t play any covers, there are enough excellent WH tunes that we don’t get to see without there being any requirement to pad the set out with other people’s songs.

I think about 7 from Chutzpah would be about right, but since it’s a short album the whole lot would still leave plenty of time for a significant slice of the old favourites.

  111. Luke Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 11:12

Haven’t bought the new album yet but I’m looking forward to it.

I think as a few people have suggested play the new album but not in album order, play a new song song then classic then new song. Or New, new, classic, new, classic, new, new. Mix it up a bit to keep everyone happy.

Some people may get a bit bored just listening to the new album especially if people haven’t purchased it yet.

May look into doing a couple of the gigs. Rock city on the 19th is pretty much certain though.

  112. Danny29x Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 11:14

Play a bit of both, It will be amazing if you can do some Earth vs track, They are classics and need to heard live!

  113. Danny29x Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 11:16

I have been a fan since 1994 and Deadly has got the perfect set list in my opinion but im normally wrong lol!

  114. MrP Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 11:23

its gotta be B for me.

i dont care how good you think the new album is, its still never gonna be a patch on the genius of dont be happy, earth v’s, phuq and fishing.

if i’m being honest the new album sounds good, but a little too “now” from the sound and production rather than being a ballsy proper “sod the production” sound of old

  115. Ben Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 11:28

Hmm its a dilemma I’m normally against playing an entire new album (due to boring people)in full when it so new to the public but they are two factors working for the band a)the running time & b) the fact Wildhearts fans are so loyal you can guarantee come the tour most of the songs will be known.

Depending the amount of stage time if its say 90 minutes there is still plenty of time so play old favourites & include some of the longer material “Rooting For The Bad Guy” “Caprice” “OCD” “Everlone” etc but if its only a 60 minute slot with 20 minutes or so left to play all the quick(er) numbers “Vanilla Radio” “Suckerpunch” “Someone That Wont Let Me Go” “Top of The World” etc would keep most people happy.

What would piss me off is an entire new album & too many longer songs, the balance has to be right.

The idea I think will work to get exposure for the new material, I don’t think TV (well in the UK)will be knocking on the door anytime soon take the same set list to Japan (maybe rotate the odd hit just to keep it fresh for the band)

If possible keep the balling rolling for some European dates next Spring & maybe some festival dates next summer & then all the hard work will have paid off.

The Beatles said of Sgt Pepper “the record can go on tour for us” after Elvis sent a car around the USA pretending to be him a few years previous.

Well I think take the album on tour & play the bloody thing so people can’t escape it

  116. Keith Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 11:49

DEFINITELY option A please! Have been coming to see you guys since 1995 and, while you always m,anage to play a great combination of new/old/classic/rarities, Chutzpah is SUCH a great album all the way through that it would be AMAZING to herar it all the way through! Of course, if you INSIST on then playing ‘Inglorious’ after that, you’d be more than welcome to! :o )

  117. Andy Says:

Haven’t heard the new album yet. Waiting for, until the CD arrives home. But anyway let´s do A!

I heard “The Jackson Whites” (the day after Jacko passed away :S ) at Peace&Love festival in Sweden, and really enjoyed it. And can´t wait to attend to the London gig.

PS: Hey Ginger, remember the Cheap Trick cap that someone threw in that concert at Sweden? That “someone” was me, hahaha, It was a pity I couldn´t get it back, because there was a funny story about it and Nikki Sixx, but anyway, enjoy it man (can use it both summer & winter)!

Cheers from the Basque Country (Spain)

  143. Armitage Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 17:12

Play the whole of the new album followed by the “Best Of”. In my opinion if a songs good enough to be on a record then it’s good enough to be played live. What is the point of spending time writing and recording a song never to play it again once you’ve left the studio? Obviously on the next Wildhearts tour the band will play the tracks from Chutzpah! that have become band and crowd pleasers. As already pointed out the album is just over half an hour long, not including the Japanese bonus tracks, so if the band play for ninety minutes there is plenty of time to do both.
I’m seeing them on their first date and last so it’ll be interesting to see how much, if at all, the set changes.

  144. Mark Golden Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 18:16

If you’re up for it why not dispense with the support band and do 2 sets. Set A – the new album. Interval – so you can get your breath back! Set B – the classics (singalongawildhearts).

    Simple. ;)

Guys, you are amazing live as everyone knows or will soon find out. Personally I have to say C which is a mix of A+B. Nina Nitro opening up makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck! Then you play some boyzone covers for all I care I would be ready to listen to you!!!!
P.S Everytime you play I wanna go, the crowd goes mental, please dont leave that classic out.

    See you in London.

  165. Rob Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 21:50

Go for playing the whole of Chutzpah! and then a few oldies (Must include: Nita Nitro, Shitsville, Vanilla Radio, Inglorious)

See you in Bristol on the 18th, can’t wait!!

  166. nadj Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 22:52

How’s about a Chutzpah medley? All the best riffs and choruses, etc, from every song strung together in a 15-20 minute mash-fest, followed by plenty much “classics”.

I say classics, but in that I include a lot from the last album too. Would be a good taster for those who haven’t got the new album yet, and also for those that have but have never heard any of the older stuff.

Anyway, no matter what you do, I know from past experience noone ever leaves a Wildhearts gig disappointed!

  167. Sam Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 23:06

This will be my first Wildhearts gig, so I’m personally hoping for option B. Looks unlikely though.

  168. Neil Rawlings Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 23:10

I say option A. Chutzpah! is amazing and I haven’t stopped listening to it since it’s release. As much as I love all WH material, I’m looking forward to hearing the new songs live, especially ‘The Jackson Whites’. My only other request is for you guys to play ‘Slaughtered Authors’ and ’29 x The Pain’ and I’ll be one happy bunny!

    Hugs

  169. Pete Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 23:25

    Jeez, it’s tough really..
..but I think ‘A’ probably is the better option, as:
    1- The album is phenominal

2- If the songs that people wanna hear don’t get played, there’s always next time (and let’s face it, it’s a Wildhearts show.. there’s always songs we ‘would have liked to hear’).

3- It’s a great way to find which songs work best live for future performances

  170. nadj Says:
    September 3rd, 2009 at 23:57

…oh, and if I may once more interject – any plans to have any of the dates filmed for DVD or anything? A live Chutzpah DVD with a few classics for bonus material would be superb!

  171. Dave Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 00:01

Can I request, without much hope of success, Channel Bop? Never heard it live but up in my top 1,000,000 favourite Wildhearts songs…

Option a -The new album is too damn short so in a long set you’d easily fit the whole album.
Have been a fan since ’95 but haven’t seen you play live for a few years so although I’d love to here the tracks off the last two or three albums live I’m with most on here saying play the whole damn album and then mix it up(or do a 2nd set)with older stuff like one from each album -your call ‘cos your just so damn good at choosing setlists(not been disappointed in any gig I’ve seen).
See you in Exeter, glad you finally made it to westcountry.

Play A, and follow it up with some rare stuff, especially some of the more recent B’ sides, like oh Bonita would be cool. Or even mix in a few SilverGinger 5 tracks if that’s not too freaky… Would love to hear ‘Last Bastard In Heaven’ ‘Girls are Better Than Boys’ and more, just given the new (and Best?) Dont forget, these comments are from a small cross section of your fan base.

A lot of people will be coming to these gigs for a rip roaring wildhearts best of set, with a few chutzpah tracks to introduce the new album, prior to touring it in its entirity next time!!!

  188. mairo Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 11:03

Option A – all of chutzpah!…. including The Snake, The Lion, The Monkey and The Spider!

From some of the older stuff wouldn’t mind hearing things like why you lie, nurse maximum shut your fucking mouth…., crying over nothing, loveshit, news of the world, bi-polar baby, the hard way, naivety play

Actually, could you just play a 3 hour set!? :)

  189. Dave Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 11:28

Option A is the best choice, the best way to tell if you like an album is too here it live However, because u would still have like 40 mins or more left u should go through some classic B sides like Hate the world day, Fire up, Underkill, Dangerlust and some shit off ‘The Wildhearts’ as that album is class

  190. Andy Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 11:53

A tricky choice – there is so much to choose from – Love both Chutzpah and The Wildhearts LPs so a fair chunk of these along with perhaps Bi Polar Baby and Why You Lie if possible.

My kids are coming too for the first time and they would love to hear some of the older stuff – the ones that made ‘em hop around the front room with big cheesy grins when they were toddlers- just like Ginger on stage really….

Chutzpah! in full is a must, just as long as you also play Splattermania – what a tune, not heard often enough!

  194. Aby Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 14:19

Option A for sure – it’s a blinding album, and short enough to leave time for enough classics to keep us all happy.

(Not enough people have mentioned Nothing Ever Changes, Loveshit, Stormy In The North or Bi-Polar Baby yet, so I’ll just throw those in there just in case you’re short of ideas by the time you get to Norwich, but then, I can’t think of a song I wouldn’t like to hear you play!)

  195. Eddy Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 15:14

    Option B, please Option B!

I haven’t heard the new album yet (still waiting for my delivery), and I’m sure it amazing. BUt it’s been over a year since I’ve seen you guys and it’d be just amazing to hear some of the classics again.

Plus I’m bringing half a dozen people with me who’ve not seen you before. It would be a shame to deprive them of the chance to hear the material I’ve been playing them over the last few months.

  196. Matthew Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 15:32

    B. The new album is amazing and several (if not most) tracks should definitely should get an airing, but at a gig I’d rather hear/dance to more old/fan favourites than new material.

  197. Nath Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 15:35

    option A, 100%

followed by a bunch of tracks from Endless, Nameless.

I doubt the latter part will happen lol

  198. Mark Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 15:56

    Option B please.

I am not a fan of entire albums being played at gigs, especially not when there is such a rich and voluminous back catalogue to choose from.

I have a feeling a few people are getting just a wee bit carried away after listening to the new album. Yes, it rocks, but I would be quite content to hear 4 or 5 songs off the new album mixed in with some of the old faves, and maybe some surprises from the back catalogue as well.

  199. Rob Woodhouse Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 16:25

    Play Chutzpah for sure

  201. joe gilmore Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 17:56

My head tells me to go for option A, but my heart tells me to go for the entire pHuq album.

However, and because Chutzpah is more a catchy pop album, please chose other loud classics to go along…and play the Chutzpah! chorus at least a third and a fourth time after its tremendous break !

  202. Breeze Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 18:02

Option A for me, thankya very much!
In fact, “skychaser” (post 92) there has pretty much got it sussed.
    Especially the venue

  203. Paul Hulme Says:

Option A. Skychasers setlist would be absolutely awesome

  204. Andy Beadle Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 18:45

You gotta open with The Jackson Whites. Other than that id like to hear Two Way Idiot Mirror. Chutzpah totally rocks its the best think ive heard for ages, but im biased.

  205. Gary Wildheart Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 18:50

    Chutzpah in full! ;-)

  206. joe gilmore Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 19:13

On second thought, a great idea would be playing just one song over and over again during the entire set (I’n thinking about “be my drugs”, or “Motorvate” with a very very low begining just to finish 90 minutes later)… or playing the entire new album of another band (the fothcoming Rammstein with of course the german lyrics).

In fact, for I live in France and having a 7 month old baby, there are few chances for me to see you on this tour, so feel free to forget my incredibly good advices (like sustaining the “caff-caff-caff-caff” in the chorus of “caffeine bomb” during one hour and a half).

  207. Johan Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 19:14

No greatest hits please though, Im tired of always getting I wanna go, love u till I dont, vanilla radio, give us a treat and play some stuff you never play! thunderfuck, urge, inglorious, rooting for the bad guy, be my drug! September 4th, 2009 at 20:26

I’ll be in Leeds on my birthday and I would love to hear a lot of Chutzpah, 7 or so tracks. As plenty of people have said, there’s loads of stuff out there that you haven’t played live much recently. You could play loads of classics and faves without it being all the usual. Loveshit, 29x, Slaughtered Authors, Bad Time, Nothing Ever Changes for example. Howay! Bring it on!

  212. grantsensei Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 20:32

I haven’t seen you guys live since 04 coz of being a Daddy, but have seen you tons before then and know the old stuff so I’d love to hear the new album in full and loads from ‘The Wildhearts’. 214. thedarkslug Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 21:43

    A. Play Chutzpah! in its entirety alongside a handful of best of’s and old classics

Do want. I can’t think of many songs (not named “V Day” or “Just in Lust”) that I haven’t already heard live. The new stuff is more than strong enough to be played in its entirety!

  215. Jon Sladden Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 22:00

A is the best option, play all the new album Chutzpah in order. Have a pint then play a set of lesser known songs. ie And The Bullshit Goes On, Down On London etc etc. Have another pint or two. Then play Mondo and Don’t Be Happy EP’s in full. Have a few more beers and play PHUQ in all. Have more beer and the play Fishing in all. Then have even more beer and play Earth Vs in all. Then have a few beers and that’ll do.

  216. Noel Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 22:28

Ha ha. Do what John Sladden said (above me)

Honestly, just giving the album it’s first proper spin now and you have to do it all in sequence …..and then some hits!!

  217. Matt Tritico Says:
    September 4th, 2009 at 22:37

Chutzpah in its entirety would be ace. I’m sure I will miss the show being in Texas but you never know.

The album is really, really good! Modernized WH for a new generation. Must Be Destroyed meets Endless Nameless meets Luckies was my first thought.

Sonically it’s the best sounding WH album, ever.

    Congrats.

    Cheers from Houston,

    Option ‘a’ for me please.
We’ve had best of sets at every gig for a while (bar the anniversary) so bring it on. I feel the self titled wasn’t pushed hard enough at gigs as it was a strong album and I loved the long experimental stuff.
    Perfect set would go thus:
    All of Chutzpah!
    Inglorious
    Shitsville
I Wanna Go Where the People Go
    Bi-Polar Baby
    Do Anything
    Be My Drug
    Everlone

    Sky Babies
    News of the World
    Nurse Maximum
    Underkill

I’m still waiting for my copy of Chutzpah! to drop through the letterbox but from what I’ve heard, you should definitely play that in its entirety. Another definite must is Borderline, as that’s one of my fave WH songs ever. You should also play Bi-Polar Baby, Cheers, Rooting For The Bad Guy, Slaughtered Authors, V-Day, Naivety Play and Inglorious as well! Please play Understanding Jane at Bristol and dedicate it to my wife! :o )

either way i know you’ll be amazing, very excited!!!! x

  230. Neil Says:
    September 5th, 2009 at 16:08

Option A. I’d love to hear every song off !Chutzpah!, although I’d happily hear them mixed with the old ones. Otherwise there’s a danger the second set may be a bit samey as the rest of your gigs for the past several years. Which are all great, but like you proved with the Earth Vs show, there’s you have so many great songs a crowd can enjoy that you don’t regularly play.

The new album is absolutely great, ‘lovin it’, but I’d be a bit pissed off if I paid for a ticket and did get to hear some of my old favourites live again. With so many brilliant songs over the years, everyone will have their own favourites but you guys know the crowd pleasers so please ‘please the crowd’.

  233. Martin Hayes Says:
    September 5th, 2009 at 17:26

Option A. Every song off of Chutzpah! They’re all great! It’s great! I’ve got it on repeat, loving the lyrics, vox, the big sound, it’s great to drive to, everything. I saw Ginger & The Sonic Circus at Nottingham Rescue Rooms after the release of the brilliant ‘Valor Del Corazon’ and if I remember correctly he played most of that album, Pump It Up, some crazy jamming with rapping and only 29x The Pain from The Wildhearts. It was a fantastic gig..Fresh and exciting (Like ‘Chutzpah!’)..And that was just Gingers thing, not The Wildhearts with the dead ace vocals on the new choruses. Option A at Stoke Sugarmill on the 25th cheers. It’s not a long album, so if a few fans don’t like it then make them wait. They might get it more when it’s played live anyway! It is the Chutzpah tour after all.

When I hear my favourite’s it makes the hairs on my neck stand up and fills me with euphoria and although Chutzpah is canny, hearing it in it’s entirety wont excite me as much as hearing a few choice cuts with the majority of the concert filled with classics. They’re not called classics for nothing!!

You could do a Rolling Stones kinda’ thing, learn 60 songs and decide on the day of each show. So each show is unique. I reckon play 20 songs of whatever takes your fancy that night. Personally as I have said before, you could play this that and the other. Your never gonna’ please everyone, so an unexpected setlist is the best. New stuff, old stuff, hits, b-sides, mix it all up and it’ll be cool.

Please play option A. Please come to the US – either Baltimore or Philadelphia and blow the f’n roof off the place. I like the idea of including rarely played songs and b-sides, although many Americans would be seeing you live for the first time, so they may disagree with my choice. I have had the great pleasure of seeing you guys live, and for me option A is a no brainer because it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to hear this great album live in its entirety. I saw the great Iron Maiden perform their A Matter of Life and Death album live and was floored at how amazing it came off. Chutzpah needs to be heard live front to back. Played it for my wife and daughter and we all were blown away! Oh, did I mention, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE come back to the US. America is ready and NEEDS the WILDHEARTS. (Philly or Baltimore, please).

Here’s my opinion for what it’s worth- play all of ‘chutzpah’, from start to finish, followed by a few ‘essential’ classics, and preferably some rarities too. You’ve such an extensive back catalogue that you really should be playing close to 2 hour sets nowadays anyhow.

I’ve seen you on every tour since 1994 plus festivals, support slots, secret gigs etc. I reckon the majority of the people at your gigs are like me too, so won’t mind missing a few of the same ones we hear every year anyway.

Any new audience members you do acquire on this tour will probably be into the new stuff anyway so would be presently surprised.

When Iron Maiden released their last album they went on tour and played the whole thing from start to finish, followed by just five old classics. They didn’t ask the fans, they just fucking did it cos they wanted to stay current and not just ride on their former glories.

As much as I love them, I’d hate for you to be like AC/DC and take the easy option.

The Wildhearts never take the easy option……

If I’m perfectly honest, anything you guys will be fucking awesome. I love the new album, and if that’s what you want to play live, then that’s what you should do. Personall, I’d live to hear a lot of the new album, but not necesarily all of it. I’d love to hear some older stuff that doesn’t get played much too, and you must end with “love u til I don’t”, that is the best end of set song bar none. I’d love to see a set like this:

    1. V Day (with the harmonics intro to the song on the end of the intro tape)
    2. The Jackson Whites
    3. Plastic Jebus
    4. Splattermania
    5. Rooting for the bad guy

As for Chutzpah, as long as The Jackson Whites is in there I don’t care. Plus let’s face it, every Wildhearts song is totally awesome, so it doesn’t matter what you play. xD Roll on Bristol!

I’ve just spent ages trying to compile a dream setlist. But they all end up with you guys playing anywhere between 3 to 4 hours.

I don’t envy you the task of deciding.

The guy who said no covers is right though, more than enough ‘Hearts tunage to suffice.

You definately need to play Chutzpah in it’s entirety – it’s amazing and I’m sure they’re gonna be awesome live. If you’d be so kind as to throw in a couple of old rarities too that’d be great, ta! :)

  269. faulzen Says:
    September 7th, 2009 at 18:07

in any case i shall add that plying an album IN FULL is never a good idea, apart from exceptional albums and occasions (e.g. ‘earth against wh’ show).

‘the only one’ sounds like a college rock song. not a bad song .. and i don’t even dislike college rock (being a pop-punk head..). but it doesn’t have the WH personality – perhaps also because sorry’s vocals.

  270. faulzen Says:
    September 7th, 2009 at 18:40

vocals on ‘mazel tov cocktail’ came out really nicely, very natural with little effects and little over-dubbing .. song is already a classic in my head.

i think that there is too much artificiality and over-production in the rest of the album.

i quite like skychaser (92 of the previous) tracklist, to which i would especially add ‘stormy’ and ‘top of the world’ somewhere.

  271. Ben Pollard-Mathias Says:
    September 7th, 2009 at 20:25

Deffinately go for option A, and play the whole album. It truely is amazing. Plus as it’s only 36 minutes long, it should only take up half the set, if that!

I cannot wait for the tour!

  272. Nige Says:
    September 7th, 2009 at 20:29

I’ve sat in the dressing room with the band before many a show, and I can tell you that they find it as difficult to choose a set list as we do. It borders on the comical, even when only a limited number of tunes have been rehearsed.
Personally I’d go for Jackson Whites, Only One, You are Proof, Sunshine, and John of Violence from Chutzpah.
Along with any old collection of classics but my choices today would be Bullshit, Red Light, Be My Drug, Revolution, People, 29 x, and maybe Love ya.

Wnything else would be a bonus. Short and sweet songs with singalongachoruses.

Play the new album, then I’d like to see some huge spinning wheel (of fortune) complete with flashing lights picking out random songs from the catalogue (covers included) to make up the encores please. Definately A.

I’ve been to see you guys since ’94 and although its good to hear the classics sets definately need to be mixed up a bit. Every gig of yours i’ve been to has been amazing however on the last tour supporting “the Wildhearts” I was gutted that only 2 songs were played as every song is fantastic on that album.

Definately don’t play the new album in order as it’s better no knowing whats coming next. Always a niughtmere being at the front and trying not to read the setlist.

Wildhearts fans are very loyal (in the UK I can only speak for) so the majority will know the material. Plus….
    New of the world
    Weekend
a few of “the wildhearts that haven’t been played offen, e.g. slaughtered athors, bibolar baby, inner city overture, the hard way.
Can’t do right for doing wrong
    Understanding Jane.

Whatever you guys do I’m sure it’ll be amazing!!!
I’m gutted that I wont be able to go as I’ve left the UK to travel for a bit.

C’mon, even Ginger was moaning about how bored he was on the last tour – well imagine how boring it is for us to have to hear “I Wanna Go Where The People Go” and “Sick Of Drugs” for the millionth time! Personally, if I never hear those songs again, it will be too soon.

Why not dust off some of those awesome b-sides too?

With the amount of Wildhearts songs that have been thrust on to those round, shiny bits of plastic over the years, there really is no reason for 2 setlists on this upcoming tour to be the same.

    Have a great tour, chaps!

    A please guys. Cannot wait.

First, whatever you do. PLAY ANTHEM! PLAY ANTHEM! PLAY ANTHEM!

Ok, that out of the way. Hmmmm it’s a tough choice.

I was really pleased in the last tour where you finished with Destroy All Monsters instead of Love U Till I Dont. Variety be the spice of life!

As Chutzpah is short then yeah, B, play it all. The other half of the gig please be mostly unusuals, like Hate The World Day! Pick just two or three stone cold classics to play, and fill the rest of the set with unusuals.

    That’s what I think.

But don’t forget, whatever you do, PLAY ANTHEM!

No point releasing a new album if you ain’t going to play much off it. I was always bumed that you played fuck all off the previous album. Play Chutzpah

  304. Fantastic Mr Foxton Says:
    September 10th, 2009 at 13:57

I’d go for option C… most of Chutzpah but not in order as it’s always nice to guess what song’s coming next! All mixed up a bit with about 4 classics and the rest of the set rarities such as Girlfriend Clothes, Hate the World Day, Inglorious etc.

    See you in Manchester!!!

  305. Fantastic Mr Foxton Says:
    September 10th, 2009 at 13:58

Oh and play Nurse Maximum too!

  306. Rich Says:
    September 10th, 2009 at 14:25

When i first read this i instantly thought option B but now im listening to the album for the ….”lost count” time, play Chutzpah!! It would be amazing to see the whole thing live and the album is short so you can still play all the songs we love!…Oh and dont forget to throw in a couple that you haven’t played in years! They are always amazing no matter what songs they are.

    See you in Glasgow!

OPTION A! Hasn’t been out of my walkman since it went in and it’s not coming out! Show A Little Emotion or Two Way Idiot Mirror tooooooooo pleeeeease! :)

  310. Manc_Lass Says:
    September 10th, 2009 at 20:32

This is so hard…despite following the band since the early nineties, I never tire of hearing any of the back catalogue, so it’s tempting for to go for the ‘best of’ option cos it’s so great to see the classics live. However, you guys have totally and utterly blown me away with Chutzpah – it is so fantastic, and has so many different elements – seeing it all live would be a pretty special experience. So option B for me!

  311. Petey Says:
    September 10th, 2009 at 20:44

Option C – play a lot of new stuff, but mix it up with some oldies!! Playing through the whole album makes it way too predictable. You need the excitement of not knowing what songs are coming next.

  312. pjt Says:
    September 10th, 2009 at 21:43

Please don’t just play “classsics”, I love those songs but I have been hearing them since I was 15 (I’m fricking 30). Play the new album, B-sides, whatever you need to keep it interesting for yourselves, very few from from earth versus required for me.

  313. Cwej Says:
    September 10th, 2009 at 22:08

by all means play the whole album , but not in order , one after another . change it round , break it up with a bit of what you fancy . album dynamics and live dynamics just ain’t the same .

like you need me to tell you that :P hell , you’re the wildhearts , you could play a set of terrorvision songs and it would still be the wildhearts . go with what feels good to you . no-one wants to see a band not feeling good . everyone wants to see the band feeling good . it maketh everyone feel good .

except the non-fans who only come to barge down the front at the end for ‘ i wanna go ‘ and would complain about not knowing the songs even if it was a classics set

  314. Station Says:
    September 10th, 2009 at 22:39

This Is a toughie, been into the ‘hearts for a long long time, ever since “Don’t be happy…….” infact, There are lots of instant classics on the new album but I’m not sure about playing all of it in one go from start to finish.

I’m comong up from sunny South Wales for the Rock City gig on the 19th and the perfect set list for me (presuming you guys will play for this long) would be:

    1: The Jackson Whites
    2: Plastic Jebus
    3: Nexus Icon
4: You Are Proof that not all Women…..etc
5: The Revolution Will Be Televised
    6: Everlone
    7: Tim Smith
    8: Low Energy Vortex
    9: Greetings From Shitsville
    10: Nina Nitro
    11: So Into You
12: You Took The Sunshine From New York
    13: Mazel Tov Cocktail
    14: TV Tan
15: Rooting For The Bad Guy
16/17: My Baby is a Headfuck straight into Suckerpunch just like on the album
    18: Loveshit
19: I Wanna Go Where the People go
    20: Vanilla Radio

    Encores:

    Caffine Bomb
    Chutzpah

Christ that was soooo difficult, there’s loads more I would like to add, I don’t envy you guys having to choose your set list

See you at Rock City :-)

My mates have a joke that I’ve either just been to see The ‘hearts, have just booked tix to see The ‘Hearts or am going next week. So obsessive or not always a pleasure. Can we also have Channel Bop.

  319. Warren Neill Says:
    September 11th, 2009 at 14:40

I’ll be at Manc so it would be whole of Chutzpah! in order and other songs to include, Rooting for the Bad Guy, Channel Bop, Unbreakable and the whole of Endless Nameless to finish…then play Jackson Whites again. How fucking good would that be. Good luck lads, cracking album and how many other bands can remain just as important after all these years, apart from Rush!!!!!!

Option B. Chutzpah! is superb but as you don’t play Manchester every other week I’d rather hear stuff from the back catalogue too. Drag up some oldies for us to enjoy. OR….. Play Buxton one week then Manchester the next week for a couples of months and run through the WHOLE back catalogue inc. Honeycrack, SG5, etc etc :-)

  324. Gary Wildheart Says:
    September 12th, 2009 at 14:40

Sky babies, anyone?

  327. Pete Says:

    ‘Chutzpah!’, please…

…followed by a set of album tracks and B-sides. Your fanbase know the back-catalogue so there’s no need for yet another biggest (s)hits set. Please banish into obscurity the awful ‘I Wanna Go Where The People Go’ and ‘Sick Of Drugs’, and give ‘…Headfuck’ a much-needed rest.

There’s no reason for either band or audience members to be bored at a Wildhearts gig. You have a wonderful and extensive canon of music. Let’s explore it together.
