Question Monster, by Dave Heulun

Before mailing Ginger a question we'd recommend having a quick search through the answers below - it's entirely possible that your question might have been asked and answered already

Q
When will the DVD be released?
A
The DVD is on hold at the moment while the band work on securing the rights of footage belonging to Warner Chappell
Q
Can my band support The Wildhearts on the next tour?
A
The support slots are discussed by the band, management and agent so there are always many options. The best way to get a chance of a support slot is to send in any material your band has recorded to the PO box address on the contacts page and it will be considered along with the rest. E-mailing Ginger without having supplied a tape is unlikely to increase your chances.
Q
Where does Justin Hawkins of the Darkness appear on The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed?
A
He sings the high harmonies on "Only Love", and does the screams on "Get Your Groove On"
Q
Why isn't Stormy in the North, Karma in the South on The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed?
A
Says Ginger "It didn't have the kind of chorus that we wanted to concentrate on for this particular album"
Q
Who plays bass on The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed?
A
The bass parts on the album were played by Ginger.
Q
How do you pronounce PHUQ? - is it 'fuck' or 'fuck you'?
A
Ginger tells us it is 'Fuck'.
Q
What's with the copy protection on 'The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed'?
A
This is a policy of the record company rather than a decision made by the band. If you're having difficulties with the CDs try mailing Gut Records rather than the band.
Q
How can I have something signed by Ginger?
A
Send it to the PO Box address on the Contacts page. Remember to include a stamped, self addressed envelope for Ginger to return it to and a covering note explaining what you would like doing.
Q
Why are the band not playing a particular city / venue?
A
This is all up to the promoters; they make the decisions upon which gigs are booked. If you cannot make the gig why not mail Helter Skelter (see contacts page for details) and ask them to consider a suitable venue for the tour

A

Q

A
Ginger: Black Gibson Les Paul 25/50 anniversary edition, Ibanez, Paul Stanley PS10

Q
Where can I find Wildhearts lyrics?
A
We hope to have a library of them on this website at some point in the future. For the time being, you can't do better than Longhair's excellent resource of earlier Wildhearts lyrics.
Q
What about guitar tabs?
A
We have found three sources for guitar tabs - one is the Wildhearts Archives site which has loads of Wildhearts tabs transcribed by fans. Also check out this site which has handwritten tabs for a number of songs. You could also try Rootnode which is a search engine of tabs.
Q
What is the band's stance on bootlegging?
A
The subject of bootlegs is one that often rears its head, both here on the site in the Ask Ginger section, and on The Wildhearts Mailing List.

While some artists prefer not to have material that hasn't been officially sanctioned by themselves out there amongst their followers, Ginger doesn't mind, as long as no one - neither himself or his fans - is getting ripped off.

As far as buying bootlegs, and with CD bootlegs being pretty much a standard these days, we can understand why trading might be difficult for people without their own CD writers. If you are going to buy bootleg CDs, the first thing to remember is that they really shouldn't cost much - the manufacturer pays no artist royalties, there's no record company cut, and no retailer wanting a slice of the pie.

To make a bootleg CD costs, at most, a few pounds, once you've taken into account the disc itself and the ink and paper for the sleeve. Which is why we often stare goggle-eyed at some of the transactions that take place every week on Ebay, with auctions of bootleg discs sometimes reaching upwards of £50.

These discs are usually offered up as "rare", despite there being no such thing when it comes to boots. True, there may not be thousands of copies in circulation like there is with official CDs. But if a recording is unofficial, there's nothing to stop people selling bootlegged bootlegs.

If you must use Ebay for boots, please don't go paying silly money, otherwise you'll be spending way more than you need to (chances are, you won't be getting a great sounding disc for your money either) and the person you're buying from will be profiteering.

Remember: if there's any money at all being made from bootlegs, morally it should be going to the artist.

And finally... If you make and sell (at cost, natch) good quality boots yourself, or if you stumble on some cracking recordings while trading, be courteous and pop some copies in the post to Ginger (you'll find the address on the Contacts page).
Q
Okay - but where is a good place to find bootlegs?
A
Undoubtedly, the most artist-friendly way to get hold of unreleased recordings is to trade (swap) them with other people. This way, there's absolutely no chance of anyone making any money out of them. It's for this reason that most traders operate with a clear conscience.

Contrary to popular belief, it's not actually that difficult to start trading. All you have to do is ask around in places like The Wildhearts Mailing List, and potential trading partners will more than likely step forward.

Obviously, you need some recordings to get you started. But again, try asking around - there are some generous people out there in the Wildhearts community who might be willing to record you some stuff for the price of a blank CD and a couple of stamps.Alternatively, if you have boots from other bands, offer these up as swaps. Trading can be very rewarding. Give it a whirl!
Q
Who is that young lady on the 'Just in Lust' CD Cover?
A
That's no lady, that's ex-Senseless Things leader Mark Keds! In 1995, when The Wildhearts were down to a three-piece in the wake of CJ's ousting, Keds joined the band. He stuck around for about three months, playing guitar and singing on the b-sides to the Just In Lust single, before heading back to his old band on the eve of a planned 'Hearts second-stage headliner at that year's Phoenix Festival.
Q
What are they singing in the chorus of 'Vanilla Radio'?
A
We have had many amusing offerings - "My elephant sweat", "I've never been Swiss", "My Elvis Swears", "My Elvis Lives" (as our very own Wayne wrongly interpreted it), "My own wish list" and "My own free space" - but we are glad to point out that the actual lyric is "Where's my Elvis?".
Q
What's that lyric in 'TV Tan' - "so soak it up" or something?
A
Says Ginger: "The words are 'so so KO', as in an overdose of the ordinary."
Q
What does the line "waking up with an 8.2" in Sick Of Drugs mean?
A
Says Ginger: "'8.2' is a reference to earthquakes measured on the Richter scale, as in headaches reaching Herculean proportions." So, basically a massive headache.
Q
What are the names of all the bands that Ginger refers to in 29 x The Pain?
A
The arguments have raged long and hard on this one. As far as we know, Ginger's never given a definitive answer, preferring for the most part to let people make their own minds up. But here are the ones we're 100% sure of:

Replacements, Husker Du, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Starz, Big Black ("and the moon is big and black"), Queen ("a full sheer heart attack"), Cheap Trick ("the cheapest trick of all"), The Clash ("when I hear that London call"), Jason And The Scorchers ("I see Jason scorching past"), Kiss, The Damned, Stiff Little Fingers ("SLF"), Blue Oyster Cult ("BOC"), Nirvana ("I'm gonna miss Kurt Cobain"), Manic Street Preachers ("where you hiding Richey James?", which replaces the Cobain line in the re-recorded version that appears as a bonus track on the vinyl, and Japanese CD, versions of Fishing For Luckies).
