Can you help me remember this band?

Postby Buddy Bradley » 22nd Apr 10, 19:58

I can remember owning an album on tape around the early 90s, about the time Pornograffiti came out. It was by an American (LA?) funk rock/metal band who ripped-off Extreme quite blatantly - but they got a bit of airplay with a single and video on Raw Power that I think had the band playing in a quarry or somewhere like that.

I also think the lead singer had white-blonde long hair and wore a bandana.

And very vaguely I think their name either had "funk" in it, or was a completely made-up word.

Can anyone help jog my memory? :hmmm:

For some reason the name Mind Funk comes to mind.

IF THERE'S A SOUND YOU PLAY THAT DOESN'T FIT TODAY,
WHY NOT JUST PLAY THE BASTARD ANYWAY?!

If it is Mind Funk, I'm sure I have the album tucked away somewhere on CD.

It wasn't Stevie Salas Colorcode, was it? I recall this song, from 1990, which got them a fair bit of press/airplay/attention just as the funk-metal thing was taking flight, and it's quite Extreme-ish. Alas, there's no quarry, but I know how the memory sometimes cheats, so I thought it was worth a shot.

No, it wasn't Mind Funk, although I did have their album (and it's still on Spotify if I ever fancy a trip down memory lane).

I also once slept on the floor of Jason Everman's ex-girlfriend's house. Which has to be the worst claim to fame ever. :D

Not SSC either. Any more ideas?

Are you thinking of Saigon Kick? The vid for Hostile Youth was shot in the Amazon but had them in the mayan ruins etc.

Mind Funk were ace, I still listen to those albums. Dropped is by far the best.

I have a vague memory of a band called King Of The Hill fitting the description given.

I thought King of the Hill, their big hit was I Do You, saw them support in the UK but can't remember who was headlining - poss Skid Row. I'm really trawling now but could it be Slave Raider? We have to have an answer this is going to drive me insane.

A trip down memory lane excellant.... KingOfTheHill supported Extreme on their second Pornograffitti tour. I saw them at Edinburgh Playhouse. I can remember their cheesey cover of 'Wild Thing' .... you make my dick swing. I kid you not!!!!

Mindfunk where another great band, that I saw once. Their first album was amazing .... it was funky but also more in a heavy thrashy metal vein. I found dropped their 2nd album good but a bit intense.

I can't help with the band as I would have gone with the other suggestions. I know they went on to huge commercial success but the Red Hot Chili Peppers (not a Ginger favourite!) did a video in a quarry, can't remember the name but it would have been just before they started to hit it really big, pre BloodSugarBabySexMagik .... and OK a long shot! They also didn't really rip off Extreme!

Mindfunk were excellent. Must dig out their albums again. Saw them live at Buckley Tivoli in 1991 (I think) supporting Kings X. Amazing gig.

Aha - I think you may have hit the jackpot! They're apparently so obscure that they don't even merit a Wikipedia entry, but the song is on YouTube:

Not sure where I was going with the whole quarry thing  but they're definitely ripping-off Extreme, even down to the brass section in the background.

Next task then is to track down the album! Thanks for all your help. :)

Oh, and I remember figuring out how to play this on my acoustic when I was about 15:

Good times. :D

Edit: There's also an "Unreleased" album on Spotify that sounds like it might be the same band.
