My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to the U.K. around February. Do you think you guys might be playing around then?
Kevin Mess
Yeah, we're hoping to put in a headline tour around then. Keep an eye out on the web site for more details.
What's your opinion on girls in rock, and who's the best rock and roll girl ever?
Dave Baird
I like girls, so I like girls in rock! The coolest rock n roll chick has to be Joan Jett, but the most talented is Maria McKee.
Is it okay to ask how you are getting on since your awful experience of depression? I mean how are things, better?
Amy Passey
Feeling a lot better. It was good to get it out, and into the open. Now I gotta move on and do something with the experience.
Was there a plan for a Wildhearts DVD? Any news?
Rob Bates
Obtaining rights to use the songs is a legal matter that is in the hands of the relevant lawyers. Which means we could all be long gone by the time they reach a conclusion.
Taking your music as a gauge of your emotional state, most of
TWMBD suggests you're content - so has the thrill of performing
live worn off?
Rob Bates
Never. When faced with a great crowd, there is nothing to beat the rush. Sometimes, before a tour, a sense of dread can kick in... but that is soon dusted off when the gig starts. Playing live is magic.
How come it took so long to get wireless systems?
Daman Age
We've used them in the past, and found them to be too un-reliable. But we're dipping our toes back into technology again, and giving them another try. I even plan on getting 'in-ear' monitors soon !
How much of a buzz do acoustic gigs give you in comparison to a full-on, rock-yer-socks-off Wildhearts gig?
Lauren Grindrod
I really enjoyed getting up close and personal with the fans on these acoustic dates. There tends to be much more of an 'anything can happen' vibe at these gatherings. I still, however, love running around, backed up by extreme volume, so they both have their benefits.
What did you think of Young Heart Attack
Jon
I thought they were fantastic. That guy has one of the best voices I've heard in years. Here's to their success...
Do you think Keef is in anywhere near the same league as Lennon?
Liz Windsor
Yeah! Keef wrote 'Tumbling Dice', which equals anything The Beatles ever wrote, in my opinion. Keef had better clothes and a cooler hair-cut, and looked more comfortable onstage. Don't get me wrong, I love Lennon, but there is room in the books for the two to be equal legends, right?
When I went to ROCK ROCK yesterday, Yoko would like to see 'Lovebank' & 'Mindslide' in Japan tour.
I said ,'Hate The World Day' & 'Underkill'. Would you play them?
Chihiro Suidu
'Mindslide'? It's really hard to sing!! I don't enjoy playing that song. We have played it live and I always hate it. 'Lovebank'? It sounds quite boring live. We tried it a few times, and it kinda drags. 'Hate The World Day'? I quite like playing that song, so maybe! 'Underkill'? Funny, we were talking of playing that one. So who knows!
I play in a band and wondered what your insight was in the classic debate regarding doing things by yourselves or getting management / record company?
Kristopher Denner
Get a manager. Then the bad guy won't be a member of the band.
Was it the ultra cool factor that inspired the flying V?
Daman Age
The 'V' is a lot easier to play, and enables me to run up and down the neck like a guitar hero... which I'm quite impressed at being able to do!
What is 'Cold Patootie Tango'?
Daman Age
When sex goes bad.
Is Jon a fully fledged part of the band now or are you waiting for Danny to come back?
Melanie Lewis
The choice of Danny's return is entirely up to Danny. He knows what we need him to do, and we will not budge on this. It is very important.
Just wanted to know when you write a song, how do you teach it to the rest
of the band?
Neil Bruce
I just get up to the mic and sing it to 'em!
What's your favourite band name?
Rob Scarlett
Speed McQueen.
As you had planned to make the album so short, could you not have shortened the price?
Iain W Morrison
I'm afraid that's a question for GUT records. I personally love short albums, so it just goes to show that one mans shit is another mans toothpaste, right? I think we give you enough value for money with the B-sides to stop even the most whining of Wildhearts fans from bleating endlessly about being dissatisfied. At least I hope so.
My cousin brought round the new Turbonegro album and theres a song called Drenched in Blood and the chorus is an exact copy of Just in Lust, have you heard it, and are they fans of yours?
Paul Thomason
We met them at the Kerrang awards, and they insisted that they had never heard of The Wildhearts. Hmmmmmm...
What guitars do you use for live sets and in the studio?
Kevin Browett
It depends on what sound I'm after. I use a Gibson Flying V these days, for live work, and in the studio I use the 'V', my old Les Paul and a Strat.
I downloaded a song called "Kiss My Arse Before You Say Goodbye"
from Kaaza. What is that about? Is that the WH with the old singer?
Matt Tritico
That was our first demo, with a guy called Snake singing.
Although I was one of the eldest [at the Leicester acoustic gig], I didn't recognise the 70's cover
you did, full of incredible guitaring! What was it?
Matt Howorth
It was called "Hocus Pocus" (with a bit of a track called "Sylvia") by a band called Focus.
When are you going to get over it and play the Endless, Nameless songs live?
Bob Pure
I dunno, but it looks like it will happen someday, just so people stop asking. Fans used to shout for 'Sky Babies', for years, now I hear they're already saying it's "too long" or "boring to hear live". Sometimes the only way to shut up Wildhearts fans is to do what they want, then they go off the idea!
I wondered what you think of people downloading your stuff from the
internet should it be banned in your opinion or not?
Rphlrm1
I'm all for it. It spreads the word around the world, whilst carrying on the valiant tradition of bootlegging, then it's all part of the tradition of music being a sharing experience... Illegal as that might be (gosh). Anyway, there only seems to be complaints from musicians that have too much money to spend in one lifetime.
Was the 'Lovebank' video enjoyable to make?
Mark Coles
What? Surrounded by naked people, girls putting Mars Bars in places not usually used for that practice, others pulling 'love beads' from the most sacred of holes and enough alcohol to kill a small country? It was Hell, I tells ya!
Is 'Nexus Icon' written about someone specifically?
Donald Deane
Not any one icon, it was written about all of them. Icons seem to follow a pattern, a mother complex, massive insecurity problems and the belief that their audience loves them as much as they themselves do. It is a comment on the 'conveyor belt' attitude and mentality of this business, and its unfortunate victims.
You said in an older Ask Ginger that you played Zomboid live and not the
rest of the songs from that era as it was written/recorded under different
circumstances. Would you ever consider re-recording the song for a future
release?
Adam Brown
Nope. Re-recording songs is a bit like sticking shit back up your arse.
What are the chances of you and Willie Dowling playing together again?
Adam Brown
I dunno how Willie feels about it, but I would dearly love to work with him again, in any capacity.
I was just wondering what inspired you when you wrote 'So Into You'?
Rachel
CJ came up with the idea. He'd just got married. I liked the idea of a love song being so simple, and that's where the idea came from. It was intended to be a Valentines day release.
I don't know if it's just me, but since you reunited Kerrang hasn't given
you nearly as much publicity as they used to.
Adam Brown
Are you crazy? Kerrang have given us loads of support. More than they have at times in the past. I'm very happy with the way they are getting behind a band that have been going as long as us. We are very lucky.
Were '6:30 Onwards' and 'Eager To Leave 'Er' originally gonna be one song?
Michael Record
They were always meant to be two songs joined into one. I never heard anyone do that before, apart from us on Suckerpunch / Headfuck... but even that was a slight cheat.
How do you choose which songs make an album and which don't?
Brian Tuohy
Dunno, it's kind of like choosing a partner. You just know what's right. In some cases people may think differently (especially regarding the last album) but I always see albums following their own direction, and I just leave 'em to it!
I was just wondering if you could give us the titles of these [Alice Cooper] tracks and was wondering if there was any plans for you yourself or The Wildhearts to record and release them?
Barry Gennard
'Molly O Lindy', 'Friction In My System' and 'Frankenstein 2000'... and no, I can't see myself re-recording them, as the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth.
I love L.T.D what is the story behind that one?
Matt Tritico
I'm afraid you'd have to ask Jon that one, his mind is a confusing place, even for those playing his songs.
I was listening to 'It's All Up To Me' and in the pre-chorus there's some mental high
harmonies, 'bastards' I believe is the preferred term. I was wondering who
sang these parts and if it was a bloke, were they sung falsetto?
John Scott
The high harmonies are sung by Stidi. He does them full voice, and has a great gritty vocal delivery when really pushing himself, like he did on that song!
Did I imagine it, or did the Wildhearts and Jason record a version of 'Last Blue Yodel'?
EvilRockPosh
Yeah, and the studio got sold, the taped destroyed and no-one I know has a copy. Amazing, huh?
The Wildhearts are still the greatest band in rock, but have you had a chance to catch a Turbonegro show?
Sean MacDonald
No, not yet. Love "Drenched In Blood" tho'
If with all the hope in the world Danny makes the line up complete again is there still room for the gurning bald headed loon Poole?
Paul Earley
2 bass players would be a bit cluttered. Who would you rather be up there playing bass?
Do you enjoy appearing at the Bulldog Bash
Vincent Buckingham
It's the event of the year. I fucking LOVE that place.
Lemmy must be knockin' 70 surely! What was he like, is he all there?
Karen Stidolph
He's actually 58, and YES, he's all there. The guy is a sharp as a tack, funny as fuck and really really smart. And on top of that he's a perfect gentleman. He definitely lived up to my expectations.
Would you say generally in your life you have found what you're looking for?
Saz Lawson
Shit, NO! I am finding out what I'm not looking for, with much more success.
Could you please tell me where you got the collection of stickers from that are on your guitar?
Mand
Er, sticker shops? I dunno, we just pick them up everywhere we go
What's the story behind Andy Cairns getting on the album?
Paul Groves
We had a part that needed an Irish bloke shouting....and the best shouty Irish bloke I know is Andy Cairns. He was available and happy to oblige. Classic stuff.
I am somewhat familiar with a latter day Replacements song titled "I'll Be You" (I remember the chorus really). My girlfriend heard the song on TV this morning and thought it sounded like a Wildhearts song, although she wasn't sure which one. Have you heard the song and, if so, was it an inspiration?
JR Remke
Your girlfriend is a sharp cookie. "I'll Be You" is where the line "like a rebel without a clue" (from '29xThe Pain') comes from. Full marks!
Who is the guy on the back of 'Fishing For More Luckies'?
Dan Overton
That's Martin Palmer, our old drum tech.
Who sings the backing vocals on 29x the pain (the version with the 'where ya hiding Richie James?' line)?
Ste Teasdale
Jef Streatfield sings BV's on that version. Great voice, that boy.
Why did I just see Danny on SMTV with his brother and Keith Baxter with Misteeq?
Mike
I heard about this and I am as baffled as the rest of you.
Probably a question you're bored with, but what is your real name?
Richard White
Gerdhwith Broadbean.
